By July 2025, a federal judge allowed Lehrman's class action lawsuit to proceed on breach of contract and deceptive business practices claims. He and fellow voice actor Linnea Sage, who had been paid just $800 for what she believed were "test scripts for radio ads," are seeking $5 million in damages. Their case crystallizes a larger conflict reshaping animation: voice synthesis technology has advanced to the point where studios no longer need human actors in the recording booth, but the legal and ethical frameworks governing this shift remain dangerously incomplete.
The Technology Behind the Takeover
Modern voice cloning relies on machine learning algorithms that analyze thousands of speech samples to replicate human vocal patterns. These systems don't just copy pitch and tone—they capture pacing, intonation, emotional coloring, even breathing patterns. Respeecher, one company at the forefront of this technology, restored James Earl Jones's iconic Darth Vader voice for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series using algorithms trained on decades of the actor's performances. The practical advantages are obvious. Traditional voice recording requires coordinating schedules, booking studio time, and managing complex logistics across multiple takes. AI voices generate performances on demand with minimal lead time. Need to change a line in post-production? Tweak the script and render a new audio file in minutes rather than calling the actor back for an expensive pickup session. Major animation software platforms like Nuke are already integrating machine learning nodes, signaling that AI voice generation will become standard workflow rather than specialized tool.
For global distribution, the economics become even more compelling. AI can generate translated voice tracks in multiple languages efficiently and affordably, bypassing the traditional need for separate voice casts in each market. A McKinsey report estimates that AI and automation adoption could add $170 billion to $600 billion annually to Australia's GDP alone by 2030, with entertainment production among the sectors seeing significant transformation.
The Hidden Clauses
The Lehrman and Sage lawsuit exposed how voice actors are losing control of their most valuable asset. But outright theft isn't the only threat. Increasingly, studios are embedding AI voice rights clauses into standard contracts—sometimes without actors realizing what they're signing away.
Fryda Wolff, who voices Catalyst in Apex Legends, warned publicly that studios "could get away with squeezing more performances out of me through feeding my voice to AI" without additional compensation or even notifying her agency. The implications extend beyond lost income. As actor Sarah Elmaleh pointed out, traditional recording sessions allow performers to refuse lines they find uncomfortable or objectionable. AI voice generation eliminates that ongoing consent—once a studio owns your voice data, they can make you say anything.
Voice actors Steve Blum, Kara Edwards, and Stephanie Sheh have all taken to social media asking fans to report when they discover their voices on AI platforms without authorization. "I have not given my permission, and never will," Blum tweeted in February 2023. "This is highly unethical." The desperation in these public appeals reflects how little recourse actors have once their voices enter the digital ecosystem.

Advocates for AI voices emphasize efficiency and cost savings. What receives less attention is what disappears in the conversion from human to algorithm. It's capturing the way a skilled actor conveys complex, sometimes contradictory emotions simultaneously—the fear beneath bravado, the affection masked by sarcasm. Human actors possess innate abilities to modulate tone and timing in response to context and creative direction that current AI systems replicate only partially.
Animation, ironically, has always relied on exaggerated, highly expressive vocal performances precisely because the medium lacks live-action's visual subtlety. The best animated voice work compensates for what static drawings or even sophisticated CGI cannot fully convey. Whether AI voices can truly match this emotional depth or merely approximate it well enough that audiences won't notice remains an open question.
The False Choice
The animation and VFX industry grew 9.3% in the second half of 2024 but contracted 7.6% in the first half of 2025—a volatile landscape where studios are desperate to reduce costs. Voice actor organizations like the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) and Australia's Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance are now sharing intelligence and coordinating advocacy efforts internationally. But they're fighting against economic pressures that make AI adoption feel inevitable to studio executives watching their balance sheets.
The real issue isn't whether AI voice technology will continue developing—it will. The question is whether the industry establishes ethical guardrails before the technology becomes so entrenched that protecting human actors becomes impossible. Voice banking services already allow performers to preserve their vocal performances through licensing agreements, suggesting a path where actors maintain control and receive ongoing compensation.
Phil Tippett's upcoming "Sentinel," the follow-up to his animated film "Mad God," is reportedly leveraging AI alongside traditional craftsmanship to push creative boundaries. This hybrid approach—using AI as a tool that enhances rather than replaces human artistry—may represent the sustainable path forward. But only if studios choose it voluntarily, or are legally required to do so before the economic incentives make human voice actors as obsolete as switchboard operators.
The voices coming from our screens may soon be indistinguishable from human performers. Whether they should be is another question entirely.
